Why These Pages Exist

Leaving ranks 51 to 100 unpublished would make the dataset's top 100 look like a top 50, and inventing names for them would corrupt the record. Publishing each point by rank and coordinates keeps the ranking complete, citable, and honest. A name is added to a profile only after it can be verified against hydrographic references.

Unnamed Outfalls FAQ

Why don't these outfalls have river names?

The underlying study publishes human-reviewed river names only for its 50 highest-ranked outfalls (Supplementary Table S5). Below that cutoff, points are identified by coordinates. Plastic Bank does not guess names: each profile will carry a name once one can be verified against hydrographic references.

Are these real rivers?

Yes. Each point is a modeled river outfall location from the study's global hydrological model, and the emission value attached to it is genuine model output. What is missing is a verified name, not the river. Many correspond to real waterways that simply have no standardized international name record.

How much plastic do the outfalls ranked 51 to 100 carry?

A combined 80,600 metric tons per year in the Meijer et al. (2021) model, 8.0% of the modeled global total. Values are modeled annual estimates, not measurements.

How do I cite one of these outfalls?

Each data profile has its own canonical URL and a copy-citation block that references the outfall by rank and coordinates, so the citation stays stable even if a verified name is added later.
